There is research investigating the benefits of compression wear.
Unfortunately, it is hard to make a definitive statement one way or the other as each study that has been done has looked at a different brand or cut of clothing. Generally, it seems that there is a positive trend with regards to reducing the feeling of muscle fatigue in athletes.
Anecdotally, athletes describe feeling like they have a better performance and recovery time when they wear it during sport.
So, it seems that compression wear probably does work.
In recent years, there have been countless brands, styles and cuts of compression wear made available.
Consider what part of your body you are likely to be using the most and this is the area for compression.
Upper body athletes can consider a t-shirt or long sleeved top.
Lower limb athletes can consider leggings, shorts or socks.
Training is usually the best time to wear compression wear.
Check with your overarching sporting governing body regarding the rules around compression wear and your sport. Some sports may see compression wear as an unfair advantage. If this is the case, you can wear your garments for one to two hours after your activity to help promote a speedy recovery.
