Navigating the path of injury recovery often involves dispelling common misconceptions. It’s a common belief that you must choose between physiotherapy and massage when recovering from an injury. However, the reality is that these two modalities complement each other exceptionally well, and the optimal choice depends on the individual patient. Physiotherapy’s strengths lie in expert assessments and targeted exercises, addressing immediate needs to get the patient on the right track to recovery. These are fundamental aspects to health care, however sometimes it may be more beneficial to have more time for some hands-on therapy. This is where massage or myotherapy comes into play.
Myotherapy specialises in providing in-depth muscle and joint care through massage, offering a different perspective on healing. This modality of healthcare allows us to provide in depth muscular care which can help de-sensitise aggravated tissue, increase range of motion of muscles and joints and decrease pain. These benefits can help patients be more compliant with exercise as well due to not being in pain and feeling stiff. This combination not only tackles immediate symptoms but also delves deeper into soft tissue issues, ensuring a more comprehensive and lasting resolution.
The collaboration between physiotherapy and myotherapy extends beyond the physical realm. It is not just about treating the injury; it’s about optimising the entire recovery process. The thorough massage provided by Myotherapists aids in enhancing blood circulation, reducing muscle tension, and promoting relaxation, creating an environment conducive to healing. In terms of cost, this approach doesn’t mean that you must double up on treatment costs. As per any good treatment plan, frequency of treatments will vary from case to case. However, using both Physiotherapy and Massage doesn’t mean your treatment schedule will double. This can be adjusted from having a massage prior to physio to loosen up with muscles from alternating between physiotherapy and massage.
While this format of treatment may not be necessary for all, it can be very beneficial for some so it can be worth speaking to your physio or Myotherapist about if they think this could be a good fit for you!
